Mattéo 5 – Vijfde Periode (september 1936 – Januari 1939), door Jean-Pierre Gibrat.
In 1936 tot 1939 tijdens de Spaanse burgeroorlog vestigd Mattéo zich in het huis van Don Figueras in Alcetrië. Ondanks Don Figueras’ sterke karakter en nationalistische overtuigingen begint Mattéo de discussies die hij met hem voert te waarderen. Het is Don Figueras die een vreemde deal zal voorstellen: om Amélie, gevangene in handen van de Francoïsten, te ruilen voor de pastoor. Beetje bij beetje begint een dialoog, verrassend, onwaarschijnlijk, en die leidt tot een openbaring die Mattéo in de verste verte niet verwachtte.
