In Gelukkige Tijden keert Thomas Deschamps terug uit Congo naar Brussel. Het is 1958 en de stad maakt zich op voor de nakende wereldtentoonstelling. Thomas bezoekt zijn pleegmoeder Rose op haar sterfbed. Ook ziet hij zijn dochter Bernadette weer. Zij wil naar Algerije vertrekken, een land waar men de wonden nog likt van de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd. Intussen begint het ook te rommelen in Belgisch-Congo. De bevolking wil zich zichzelf besturen.
Gelukkige Tijden is het vervolg op Nieuwe tijden en Na de Oorlog, een razend knap familie-epos rond de twee broers Deschamps. Een derde deel in dit langzaam, sfeervol en intens drama van Warnauts en Raives.
