Achter zijn nieuwe huis treft Simon een steriel gazon aan, omzoomd door sombere heggen en enkele bomen. Dierlijk leven valt er nauwelijks te bekennen. Zonder plan en ongehinderd door kennis of ervaring, gaat hij met zijn gezin aan de slag en samen creëren ze in tien jaar tijd een stadsoase, drukbezocht door kikkers, egels, vogels en insecten. De Oase is het verslag van die tien jaar en vormt een prachtig voorbeeld van hoe iedere tuin kan bijdragen aan de biodiversiteit dankzij wat enthousiasme en een paar opgestroopte mouwen.
